How to Build Confidence When Speaking English

Learning to speak English can feel difficult, especially if it is not your first language. Many people feel nervous or shy when they try to speak. However, with practice and the right mindset, you can become more confident. Here are some tips to help you feel better when speaking English.

Practice Every Day

The more you practice, the better you will get. Try to use English every day. You can practice speaking with friends, family, or even by yourself. Reading out loud or talking to yourself about your day can help you get used to hearing your own voice in English.

And of course, while you are in school, we only speak English!

When you venture out to use English in real world situations if you are shy, start small. For example, say one or two sentences in English when ordering food or asking for directions. Over time, you can increase the amount you speak.

Learn Common Phrases

Sometimes, it is hard to find the right words when speaking a new language. Learning common phrases can make conversations easier. For example, you can learn how to ask for help, talk about the weather, or introduce yourself.

Practicing these phrases will give you a good foundation. You will also feel more prepared when you need to speak English in real life.

Listen to English Often

Listening is a big part of learning to speak confidently. Try to listen to English every day. You can watch movies, listen to podcasts, or enjoy music in English. When you hear how native speakers talk, you will learn the natural rhythm and pronunciation of words.

If you do not understand everything, do not worry! Focus on the main ideas and pay attention to how words are used. This will help you feel more comfortable when speaking.

Join a Speaking Group

During your time in school there are plenty of opportunities to get chatting in English! In the classrooms, break times, social activities, we offer a special ‘communication club’ every Wednesday which focuses specifically on speaking.  But what about when you are at home and need to practise?

Many communities have groups where people practice speaking English together. Joining a group is a great way to meet others who are learning, just like you. It is a safe space to practice without feeling judged.

If you cannot find a group near you, look online. There are many websites and apps where you can join virtual English conversations.

Do Not Be Afraid of Mistakes

It is normal to make mistakes when learning a new language. Do not let this stop you. Every mistake is an opportunity to learn. Remember, the people you are speaking to will usually understand and appreciate your effort.

Instead of feeling bad about mistakes, think of them as steps toward improvement. The more you practice, the fewer mistakes you will make.

Use a Mirror

Practicing in front of a mirror can help you feel more confident. When you speak to the mirror, you can watch your mouth and face as you talk. This helps you focus on pronunciation and body language.

It may feel strange at first, but it can make a big difference. Try practicing introductions, telling short stories, or explaining something simple.

Set Small Goals

Setting small goals can help you stay motivated. For example, you can aim to learn five new words a week or have a short conversation with someone in English.

Celebrate when you achieve your goals. This will make you feel proud and encourage you to keep going.

Stay Positive

Confidence comes from believing in yourself. Remind yourself that learning a language takes time and effort. Do not compare yourself to others; focus on your own progress.

When you feel nervous, take a deep breath and remember that it is okay to not be perfect. The most important thing is to try.
