One of the best things about Manchester is that it has a wonderfully compact city centre. Because IH Manchester is right in the heart of the city there are so many things within walking distance. This allows you to make the most of your time in Manchester, explore the city after you finish lessons for the day or even during your lunch break!

As a bonus, if you don’t feel like walking, you can use the free bus that runs around the city centre.  Buses run every ten minutes, so it is extremely easy to travel around the city, however you choose to get around.

Chinatown

Manchester’s Chinatown is the 2nd largest Chinatown in the UK and the 3rd largest in Europe. The beautiful Chinese archway that stands on Faulkner Street has been there since 1987. Visit a fantastic selection of shops, bakeries, restaurants and supermarkets.

13 minute walk from IH Manchester

Printworks is large entertainment complex in the centre of Manchester. Its cinema boasts one of the largest IMAX screens in Europe. It offers over 20 bars and restaurants and entertainment experiences such as ten pin bowling, escape rooms and adventure golf.

Northern Quarter
9 minute walk from IH Manchester

The Northern Quarter is the creative centre of Manchester. Take a walk around the Northern Quarter to enjoy and marvel at the breathtaking street art. It is like an open air art museum!

If you enjoy quirky shops and venues, this is definitely the place for you.  The famous Affleck’s Palace is a must visit. Set over three floors, you can explore dozens of independent shops and stalls. It is a really unique shopping experience. But, if you enjoy something a little more high tech The Virtual Hideout in the Northern Quarter might be for you.  It is a virtual reality and gaming centre with 100 VR and gaming experiences available.

Shopping, shopping and more shopping! Whatever type of high street shopping you are looking for, you will find it at the Arndale Centre.

The Arndale Centre was first built in the late 1970’s at a cost of £100 million. It was then redeveloped in 1996.

The Arndale is open 8am – 8pm Monday to Saturday and 11.30am-5.30pm Sunday.  It has over 200 stores.

This beautiful public library faces St Peter’s Square, Manchester. Built between 1930 and 1934, the library is a grade II listed building. Whether you need to do some homework or just want to enjoy the incredible architecture, Central Library is definitely worth a visit.

Piccadilly Gardens
5 minute walk from IH Manchester

Piccadilly Gardens is the main transport hub in Manchester. Most of the buses and trams will arrive here. IH Manchester students will have just a 5 minute walk to school when they arrive in Manchester each morning. There is also a large grassed area which is great for meeting friends or a lunch break.

National Football Museum

Manchester is lucky enough to be home to the National Football Museum. The museum is housed in the incredible Urbis Building, an iconic part of the Manchester skyline. The glass building has six storeys and a distinctive sloping form.

The National Museum itself if set over four floors. You can enjoy interactive exhibitions such as the penalty shoot-out. Even if you are not a football fan, I’m sure you will enjoy a fascinating trip around the National Football Museum.

Enjoy this wonderful collection of over 46,000 objects of fine art, decorative art and costume, developed over 200 years! Manchester Art Gallery is open Tuesday – Sunday from 10am – 5pm and entry is free.

Royal Exchange Theatre
12 minute walk from IH Manchester

The Royal Exchange Theatre really is something special to see. It is housed within the historic Royal Exchange building. It is the largest in-the-round theatre in the country. In-the-round theatres have audience seating on every side of the stage, in this case 7 sides. The structure weights a huge 150 tonnes, which is too heavy for the floor of the grade II listed Royal Exchange building. Brilliant engineering allows the theatre ‘module’ to be suspended from the four main columns which support the Royal Exchange’s domed roof.
