Liverpool Day Trip

Manchester is perfectly situated to be able to visit lots of other places in the North of England in a day.  A Liverpool day trip should be top of your list!

Liverpool is easily accessible from Manchester, a train journey taking less than an hour and costing less than £10.00 (as per www.thetrainline.com 24th Feb 2022).

The city of Liverpool sits on the river Mersey where it meets the Irish sea. It is also famously the home of The Beatles. And if you are a football fan of course it is home to premiership club Liverpool FC.

Take a look at our guide of things to do in Liverpool:

The Cavern Quarter

Matthew Street in the Cavern Quarter is a must visit for any music fans.  Submerge yourself in the history of one of the world’s most famous bands– The Beatles.  Follow the story of the Beatles starting at the Cavern Club.  Visit the basement for a drink and to listen to live music and imagine what it would have been like to see the famous four-piece band perform there in the early days of their career.

Visit the Liverpool Beatles Museum set over three floors with plenty to interest even for the keenest Beatles fan.

Enjoy a choice of Beatles themed pubs along Matthew Street and if you fancy a longer stay in Liverpool there is the “Hard Day’s Night” hotel on the corner of Matthew Street.

Liverpool Waterfront

No trip to Liverpool is complete without visiting the iconic waterfront. A glorious setting that offers culture, art, architecture and history.  Enjoy a walk along the waterfront and take in views of the magnificent Liver Building.  The Liver Building is one of Liverpool’s most famous and recognizable landmarks. Two liver birds sit atop the building, one looking out to sea and one looking over the city.  The design is a part of Liverpool’s rich maritime history. It is said that the liver bird who looks over the city represents the sailors out at sea looking to their home and the liver bird looking out to sea represents the sailor’s families looking out to sea hoping for their safe return. You can find out more about the history of Liverpool at the Merseyside Maritime Museum or at the newly opened, interactive Museum of Liverpool.

Or if modern art is more your interest then Tate Liverpool is for you.  Enjoy world-class art in the heart of Liverpool.

Mersey Ferries

Liverpool is also famous for its ferry trips, the subject of the song “Ferry Across the Mersey” by Gerry and the Pacemakers. A unique way to see the city, you can take a ferry cruise for approximately £11.00 and enjoy the views from the Mersey river.

Liverpool FC Tours

Football fans can take the opportunity to take a tour of Liverpool FC’S Anfield stadium.  See the state-of-the-art dressing rooms, walk the tunnel, step inside the press room – get a proper behind-the-scenes look into life at the Premiership club.

The tour includes “The Liverpool FC Story”, the Club’s interactive museum and “The Steven Gerrard Collection”.

Shopping

If you like shopping, you’ll find plenty to keep you entertained in Liverpool! Take a trip to Bold Street and you will find lots of independent retailers selling all sorts of goodies. “Lonely Planet”  featured Bold Street as one of the best shopping streets in the country.

“Liverpool ONE” is the waterfront shopping district where you’ll find all your high street favourites. Choose from 170 shops, bars and restaurants.

And if designer brands are what you are looking for, visit the Metquarter for exclusive fashion and beauty shopping.

IH Manchester students Bartoleme and Andrea recently enjoyed a day trip to Liverpool.
