Why is pronunciation so difficult to improve?
Many English learners reach a frustrating point in their progress.
They understand grammar. They know vocabulary. They can follow conversations. But when they speak, people still ask them to repeat. Sometimes more than once.
Pronunciation can be one of the hardest areas of English to improve. It can also be one of the most discouraging. Learners often feel they have put in years of effort, yet still struggle to be clearly understood.
This is a common experience, and it is not a reflection of ability or effort. Pronunciation works differently from other areas of language. It depends on physical habits, listening awareness, and patterns that are often difficult to notice without the right support.
At IH Manchester, we are delighted to introduce a new way to support learners facing this challenge with our English Pronunciation lessons.

A specialist solution from Nicole Walsh
This new 1:1 pronunciation programme is delivered by Nicole Walsh, a qualified Speech and Language Therapist and experienced English teacher.
This combination is rare, and it brings a wider range of tools to pronunciation work. Nicole is able to approach pronunciation not only as a language system, but also as a physical process. This allows her to identify specific issues more precisely and provide targeted, practical solutions.
Drawing on both fields, Nicole supports learners to understand how sounds are produced, how patterns affect clarity, and how to make consistent, lasting improvements.
What makes this different?
Many learners have already tried to improve their pronunciation through listening practice or repetition. These methods can help, but they do not always lead to clear and reliable change.
Nicole’s approach is more specialised, structured and individual. Each student begins with an assessment to identify the sounds and patterns that most affect their clarity. From there, a personalised plan is created for the following sessions.
In sessions, students work on:
There is also a clear focus on communication, helping students use their pronunciation more effectively in real situations. The aim is not to change your accent. The focus is on clarity and intelligibility, so you can be understood more easily and speak with greater confidence.
Lessons are delivered one-to-one, either online or in person. This allows Nicole to adapt each session to the learner’s needs, with regular feedback and clear direction for improvement.
A more effective way forward
For many learners, pronunciation is the final barrier to confident communication. With the right approach, it is possible to make meaningful progress.
This course offers a more specialised and targeted solution, led by a teacher with expertise across both language teaching and speech and language work.
